Nearly four decades after it first parodied Star Wars and space opera tropes with outrageous laughs, Spaceballs is officially getting a sequel.
Amazon MGM Studios announced on Thursday that Spaceballs 2—cheekily titled The Schwartz Awakens—is set to hit theaters in 2027, marking the return of beloved comedy legends and a new generation of stars.
The announcement came in true Spaceballs fashion: a satirical teaser video featuring a scrolling opening crawl mocking Hollywood's current franchise overload—from Marvel and Avatar to endless Star Wars spin-offs. The parody trailer ends with the proclamation: "The Schwartz Awakens in 2027," followed by the unmistakable voice of Mel Brooks, who declares, “May the Schwartz be with you!”—and adds with a wink, “I told you we’d be back.”
Mel Brooks Returns at 98
The legendary Mel Brooks, now 98, will return to play the wise Yogurt while also producing the film. He’s joined by returning stars Rick Moranis as the villainous Dark Helmet and Bill Pullman as the heroic Lone Starr—both reprising their roles from the original 1987 cult classic. For Moranis, this marks his first major live-action film role since stepping away from Hollywood in the ’90s to focus on raising his children.
“This is a full-circle moment,” said Brooks in a statement. “We had a blast the first time, and this one’s going to be even more ridiculous.”
New Generation Joins the Cast
Joining the classic cast is Keke Palmer, whose role remains under wraps, and Josh Gad, who not only stars but also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Detective Pikachu scribes Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Gad is also serving as a co-producer on the film.
Gad reportedly pitched the idea to Brooks in a passionate 40-minute meeting, which led to the green light. “We wanted to make something that felt like a genuine love letter to the original, not just a sequel for the sake of it,” said Gad. “Mel was completely on board—his comic instincts are sharper than ever.”
Directed by Josh Greenbaum
Director Josh Greenbaum, known for Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar and Strays, is helming the sequel. His blend of absurdist humor and character-driven storytelling makes him a fitting choice for reviving the outrageous world of Planet Spaceball.
Plot Under Wraps, Release Set for 2027
While plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, insiders hint that the film will continue lampooning modern sci-fi franchises and pop culture phenomena. According to Amazon MGM Studios, the script balances nostalgic callbacks with fresh, absurdist gags.
Production is expected to begin in early 2026, with a theatrical release scheduled for 2027.
A Cult Classic Reawakened
Originally released in 1987, Spaceballs was a spoof of George Lucas’ Star Wars and other sci-fi epics. While it was only a modest box office success at the time, it grew into a cult phenomenon thanks to home video and repeated TV airings. Its offbeat humor, iconic characters, and quotable lines made it a fan favorite for generations.
Now, nearly 40 years later, Spaceballs 2 aims to bring the Schwartz back in a big way.
> “It’s time,” Brooks said in the teaser, his voice echoing over the stars. “We’ve waited long enough. Fasten your seatbelts—again.”
Spaceballs: The Schwartz Awakens is scheduled to hit theaters worldwide in 2027.
